Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
Description UHMW-PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is one of the most versatile and resilient thermoplastics on the market. It is easily cut and machined with standard wood & metalworking tools. UHMW-PE has extremely low moisture absorption, excellent impact resistance, is self lubricating eliminating the need for oils or grease, and has a very low coeffient of friction (comparable to teflon). It is also resistant to abrasion (15 times more resistant than carbon steel). UHMW-PE is is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals, with exception of oxidizing acids. It has a maximum continuous service temperature of 180°F.
Applications include slide bars, wear strips, bearings, bushings, rollers, conveyor liners, gear wheels, snow plough blades, bowling alleys, food & beverage machinery, chemical, mining, & mineral processing equipment, recreational equipment, and orthopedic implants.
UHMW-PE is available in two grades: Virgin and Reprocessed. Virgin UHMW-PE is the most common variety. It is white in colour, and is F.D.A. approved for food & beverage applications. Reprocessed UHMW-PE is black in colour, is not F.D.A approved, but retains most of the physical properties of virgin material other than impact resistance (15% loss is typical). It is also slightly more economical.
Available in Rod (Virgin grade only) & Sheet in various sizes. Please check with your nearest store for stock sizes.
